Why is the UGME program migrating assessments over to ExamSoft?

ExamSoft enables the UGME program to implement more robust assessment practices while ensuring students complete assessments in a secure and stable offline environment.  The aim of this change is to improve the formative feedback that we offer students throughout the program.

Specifically, the use of ExamSoft for formative and summative assessments offers the following benefits:

  • Assessment results for all assessments (CAEs, PIEs, Clerkship examinations, PPIs) can be analyzed to evaluate the quality of each question
  • Student performance across all assessments can be correlated to assist with the timely identification of students requiring additional academic support
  • Question items (including the item’s revision history, use in assessments, and psychometric analysis) for all assessments can be saved in a central bank
  • Faculty can view question items from all areas of the undergraduate curriculum, thereby facilitating consistency in question-writing and improving integration between areas of the curriculum
  • For Clerkship examinations, multiple choice assessments can be graded automatically
  • For CAEs and PIEs, tutors can better focus on students’ responses, without the need to decipher varying handwriting styles
  • For CAEs and PIEs, assessments can be anonymized during grading to reduce grader bias

Collectively, the use of ExamSoft should improve the formative feedback that students receive throughout the program.  As use of ExamSoft ramps up, students should begin to notice more rapid access to assessment results and enhanced assessment questions that advance student learning.
